Meyer E-58H Hose Upgrades

From original hoses used on the Meyer E-58H units.

Above is an example of the hoses used on the Meyer E-58H on EZ Plus mount. They are TOO LONG.

March 2006 -
2 of each
22420 - HOSE ASSY 1/4X33" M-6XFACESEAL
22460 - SAE 6 x 90 Degree Elbow (Male SAE x Female SAE)
So in 2006 The E-58H was using 33" long hoses.

April 2011-
2 of each
22461 - Hose Ass'y. SAE 1/4 x 38" Lg. M-6 x Faceseal (Has SAE to Faceseal Adapter on each end)
22460 - SAE 6 x 90 Degree Elbow (Male SAE x Female SAE)

Then for whatever reason, Meyer switched to EVEN LONGER hoses (22461).
(I just want to note the pictures are all of a plow with 33" long hoses)

Let's talk a little about hoses. Both hoses below are the same length.
The difference is the ends.

22420 - Hose Ass'y 1/4 X 33" Lg M-6 x Faceseal (Has SAE to Faceseal Adapter on each end)
22884 - HOSE, 1/4" X 33", FEM ORF SWVL (Faceseal) NO ADAPTER ON ENDS

Now when Meyer first offered power angling in the 60's, and right up until the end of the EZ Classic, they ALL used 45" hoses. Both the 21856 and the later 22144 were 45" long. In the EZ Classic and the prior EZ Custom (Custom Classic) there were many configurations as far as the distance between the Lift Frame (pump mounted height) and the plow blade, as well as A Frame lengths, so it is somewhat understandable. Once the MDII came out, the distance was the same. The only possible variable is how much slack is left in the chain (and a 10" PA Ram vs. a 12" PA Ram). A LOT of slack would result in longer hoses being necessary when cresting a steep hill where the blade could drop even lower than on flat ground. Even that is somewhat limited, because the more slack left in a chain, the lower the plow will lift. Most will just make multiple passes at the top of the hill to clean up any snow left behind that was not removed when cresting the hill. Much easier to sit in a warm truck and do it than to adjust chains. Also with the MDII came the fittings being move to the outside of the PA Ram putting it in harms way. This was at least corrected later by switching to cross drilled PA Rams, so on the EZ Classic mount plows that fittings could be put on top. Sometimes it required a little grinding, and I recall the PA Clevises on the A Frame being "nipped" to give clearance. Not so on the MDII, fittings on the sides. Going to SAE ports also meant a larger 90 degree elbow, which meant moving it to the top would require more grinding.

When the EZ Plus came out, it was status quo. Fittings on the sides. For YEARS we had to deal with it being difficult to tighten the 22460 Elbow. It required a 3/4" wrench to be sacrificed, grinding down the open end to make it thin enough to tighten the nut (that makes the seal) on the Elbow. The 22460 Elbow carried on for a while, I am not 100% sure if it was changed prior to 2011, and it was likely a "running change" which in manufacturing terms means "when we run out of the old, we start using the new". Well the 22460 Elbow was likely replaced because with the SAE to Faceseal 22866 Elbow, one adapter was eliminated. Whatever the reason it was a blessing, because it is much easier to tighten the 3/4" nut on 22866 Elbow. The 22461 and the 22420 Hoses still came with 2 Adapters on them, which was great because we could keep one as a spare. I say this because there was no part number for just the Adapter. We could not order them from Meyer!

For a while around 2007 Meyer was trying to eliminate so many part offerings and combinations of plows, to streamline production and inventory. I understand on a large scale it was likely a nightmare BUT it comes with the territory IMO. The only SAE and Faceseal hoses were used on the Xpress with E-88 (and later the E-68) and the E-58H. Then along came the E-72. With it came new Faceseal hoses in 22", 33", and 54" lengths. The 33" was already available but came with the adapters on the ends so they created a new part number...

22883 - HOSE, 1/4" X 22", FEM ORF SWVL (Faceseal) NO ADAPTER ON ENDS
22884 - HOSE, 1/4" X 33", FEM ORF SWVL (Faceseal) NO ADAPTER ON ENDS
22885 - HOSE, 1/4" X 54", FEM ORF SWVL (Faceseal) NO ADAPTER ON ENDS

Now this plow in all these pictures is MY personal plow. When I installed the PA Rams, I left the standard 38" on the PA Rams when I installed them. In the old 15988 Hydraulic carton the Hoses were already installed on the PA Rams. I just bolted them on. The standard instruction for hoses that are too long is "twist the hose to create a loop" before tightening it. I lived with it for years before I got around to doing something about it. Well the time came.

22866 - ELBOW 90, 3/8 SAE-MX3/8 ORF-M (Faceseal)
22460 - ELBOW 90 SAE-6 MXF (Male SAE x Female SAE)

You can see how you can barely fit a wrench on the nut of the smaller 22866, now imagine the fat 22460 there.....
You can also see I always install the back bolts for the PA Rams with the nuts on top, protected.

So now for the upgrades. I started on the driver's side and posted the hose upgrade on our Facebook page, but I was not done. I wanted to do both sides AND move the elbows to the top out of harms way. Again, this is my personal plow, and I have not had any problems with the elbows, BUT I have had many customers have to come back with their plows because they did and do have problems. The #1 problem is on the passenger side. Debris, ice chunks, snow, shrubs, whatever hits the elbow, and does not snap it off (have never seen that) but it loosens it. As soon as it gets a litttle loose, the hydraulic pressure cuts the O Ring and sprays out all the fluid. 99% of the time the customer will call or come in and tell me the plow won't go up. Well, with no fluid in it, no it won't. They have no idea why. One customer had it happen several times, so I made a skid plate for the bottom of the PA Ram to protect the Elbow. It was the easiest fix at the time. Anyway, here is the upgrade on the driver's side.

I did not have to grind the PA Clevis at all on this side, but you might.

Now the passenger side I did have to grind the PA Clevis to fit the Elbow. Not much, just a little grinding.

Since this is my personal plow, it has some other little upgrades I thought I would share here.

I added a grease fitting to my Lift Arm. Rust inside the tube has been a problem since the MDII days. NOT on my plow.

Since I have had quite a few units come in with the bolt seized in the bottom hole of the Sump Base,
and I see many with excessive wear on the hole, I added a grease fitting to my Sump Base as well.

To put the grease fitting in the Sump Base I just drilled a hole and tapped it. To put the grease fitting in the Lift arm, you need to weld a little dab, grind a flat on it, then drill and tap. The wall thickness of the sleeve is too thin otherwise, and the grease fitting will hit the bolt inside.

Just a friendly reminder to not leave your EZ Plus pins locked in the open position in the off season, no sense in leaving tension on the springs.

So if you want to do the hose upgrade to your E-58H on an EZ PLUS mount, you will need:

(1) 22866 Elbow (for the PA Block on the driver's side)
(1) 22883 Hose for driver's side
(1) 22884 Hose for the passenger side
(IF your unit is an early one, with Couplers, you will need to order two additional 22866 Elbows for the PA Rams, and a 22420 (so you get the Adapters too) so you can use an Adapter for the passenger side hose on the back of the E-58H.
